Asmara International Community School (AICS), Eritrea

The Asmara International Community School is a non-profit PK-12 school established in 1994 by the US Embassy and the United Nations mission in Eritrea, under an agreement with the Eritrean Ministry of Education. Currently, the school has 165 students from the age of two up to Grade 12 representing approximately 20 nationalities. It is the school of choice for both expatriate families as well as the families of the Eritrean diaspora who are seeking a continuous educational path for their foreign-born and raised children. The school is situated in rented purpose-built school facilities that include outdoor playing areas, a playground, a covered outside eating area, a multi-purpose room for assemblies and events, a new science lab, an IT lab, art room, music room, library, and classrooms.

AICS' curriculum continues to develop. We offer a program that combines elements of both American International and British International schools and are moving forward from Candidacy to the Authorization of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Grades 11 & 12. The school is accredited by Middle States in the US which means that our grades and diplomas are recognized by schools and universities around the world. In addition to our commitment to our accreditation process as a path to excellence, AICS works hard to ensure that both local and foreign teachers are of very high quality. Recent foreign staff have come from the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Spain, Russia, Malaysia, South Africa, New Zealand and the US.

As a school, we have and continue to be a school-focused on providing a supportive learning environment. Our students and parents have clearly identified the primary strength of our school as being a place where teachers care about students. We continue to work to improve educational outcomes and have seen significant and regular improvements on both our International School Assessments and our PSAT’s. Bright, hard-working students can do exceptionally well at the school - with a number of our Secondary students scoring in the top 10%, 5% or even 1% of students taking the PSAT worldwide. Students and parents, in general, find our teachers always approachable and always willing to work with students who need some extra support or just have further questions to enrich themselves.

The school has recently put significant funds into ensuring a high level of resources to support our continual learning - with new textbook purchases, a new science lab, a new IT lab, new resources for our PE, Art, and Music programs, as well as professional learning for teachers.

If you are already planning to come to Asmara to work and live, or are thinking of it, please contact us with any questions. We are here to Inspire, Challenge and Engage your child.
